 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16th, 1971 - March 31st, 1995), also known as Selena, is an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She is one of the most prominent Mexican-American entertainers of late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in 2020 in their "Greatest Latino Artists of All Time", which was built on Latin music as well as Latin albums. For her choice of clothing, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. Her fashion choices make her one of the most prominent Latin artists. Quintanilla Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized in the 1980s , and was denied bookings at Texas venues for her performance of Tejano music, which is a largely male-dominated genre. The acclaim she received grew after she won the Tejano Music Award as Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She was awarded the award nine times. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name the same year, while her brother became her main music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) and reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. Music critics called it the "breakthrough recording" of her musical career due to its commercial success. "Como la Flor" was one of the album's singles, became her most loved hero song. Live! (1993) won the award for Best American/Mexican album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first female Tejano artist to receive this honor. In 1994, she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most popular Latin albums in the United States. Critically, it was credited as the catalyst for Tejano music's first commercial era. It was one of Latin music's most popular subgenres.
